The joy in the air was quite palpable as the University of Ibadan (UI) Vice Chancellor, Prof. Abel Idowu Olayinka, FAS, turned the sod for the new Administrative Building of the UI Distance Learning Centre recently.

The new Administrative building, which is to be located at the Distance Learning Centre (DLC) Computer Based Testing (CBT) Centre, Ajibode Axis of the University was a very welcomed idea among the management, staff and students of DLC, as it would ease off their burden of going all the way to Moniya, Idiose where the current Head Office of the Centre is located on a daily basis, for official activities.

The University of Ibadan (UI) brand continues to shine as one of its own; Prof. Nelson Mobolanle Oyesiku, a graduate of the College of Medicine, UI becomes elected as the President of World Federation of Neurological Societies.

Born in Nigeria, Prof. Oyesiku attended the University of Ibadan, Ibadan from where he obtained an MB.BS degree in Medicine in 1979. After his first degree, he proceeded to the University of London as a Commonwealth scholar to obtain a Master of Science degree, following which he was admitted for the Neuroscience graduate program at Emory University, Atlanta, from where he obtained a Ph.D.

Oyo State Governor, Engineer Seyi Makinde, has approved the appointment of a seasoned Economist from the Department of Economics, University of Ibadan, Dr. Musibau Adetunji Babatunde, as his Chief Economic Adviser.

The Governor, in a statement endorsed by his Chief Press Secretary, Mr. Taiwo Adisa, confirmed that Babatunde’s appointment takes immediate effect. Governor Makinde, who had announced a four-point developmental agenda for Oyo State, had named the expansion of the state’s economy as one the key pillars.

Some of the ways to measure the quality of a university is to find out what her graduates are doing after leaving the institution and their contributions toward their alma mater.

The Vice-Chancellor, University of Ibadan, Prof. Abel Idowu Olayinka made the assertion in a remark while commissioning A206 classroom renovated by the Alumni of the Faculty of Education also known as UI Likeminds Initiatives on Friday. According to Prof. Olayinka, in other parts of the world, alumni always try to give back to their alma mater, as a way of supporting the institution to improve and perform better.

The 1987 Graduating Set of the Department of Special Education, University of Ibadan (UI) paid a courtesy visit to the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Abel, Idowu Olayinka, FAS during a recent reunion organized by the set.

Speaking on the occasion of the visit, the team leader, who is also the Dean of the Faculty of Education, Prof. Julius A. Ademokoya resounded the nostalgic feeling with which they remember their days in the University and their alma mater which contributed in no little way, to what they are today.

The Executive Secretary of the Tertiary Education Trust Fund, Prof. Elias Suleman Bogoro has stated that Government focus is no longer on funding Physical Infrastructure in Tertiary Institutions only, but shifting towards funding Research and Development projects as well.

Prof. Bogoro made this statement while commissioning the Renewable Resources Centre of the Department of Environment Sciences, Faculty of Public Health, University of Ibadan.

As part of efforts towards fostering collaborations that will enhance learning and acquisition of skills for students, the management of University of Ibadan, recently, 2019, received Prof. Narciso Matos who came on an exploratory visit to the institution.

Prof. Matos is a seasoned academic who has been a two time Vice Chancellor in Universities in Mozambique, including Univesidade Politécnica, where he is currently holding the reins as the Vice Chancellor, as well as a one-time Secretary General of the Association of African Universities.

The Oyo State Governor elect, Engr. Abiodun Oluwaseyi Makinde has donated the sum of N25 million to the University of Ibadan towards the rehabilitation of facilities affected by recent rainstorm in the University of Ibadan during the recent heavy rainfall and thunderstorm in the city of Ibadan.

The N25 million cheque was presented during a courtesy call by Engr. Seyi Makinde to the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Abel Idowu Olayinka, FAS, on Friday 15 March, 2019.

Engr. Makinde stated that his was a “Thank you” visit for the immense support he enjoyed from the University Community, and to appreciate the credible role UI staff played in the conduct of the recent elections in Oyo State.

The Deputy Vice Chancellor (Research, Innovation and Strategic Partnership) Professor Olanike K. Adeyemo, FAS, of the University of Ibadan has been honored with an invitation to join the Expert Group of the High Level Panel for a Sustainable Ocean Economy.

Prof. Adeyemo will be serving on this panel with 14 Heads of Government from Australia, Canada, Chile, Fiji, Ghana, Indonesia, Jamaica, Japan, Kenya, Namibia, Norway, Mexico, Palau and Portugal.

It was not the first time a contingent of the University o Ibadan would be visiting the sprawling architectural master-piece abode of Otunba Michael Olasubomi Balogun, the founder of First City Monument Bank, FCMB, and the Olori Omo Oba of Ijebu. But the reason for this particular visit was not different from that of the previous visits. It was yet another “thank you” visit prompted by another of Otunba Subomi Balogun’s kind gesture

A few days before the visit, the University of Ibadan had played host to Otunba Subomi Balogun on the occasion of the naming of the UI Hotels and Conference Centre after him.

The Yinka Ayoola Institute was established by Hon. Justice Yinka Ayoola as a learning Institute with one of its features being the Temidire Camp which is located in a serene environment and has facilities that can enhance academic/intellectual exercise and achievements.

A Veteran Journalist and Public Relations guru, Oloye Lekan Alabi has charged the media not to be partisan in reporting the upcoming 2019 elections but to practice within the ambit of the Law.

He gave this charge while presenting a lecture entitled: “2019 Elections: Facts, Myths and Realities” in commemoration of the 10th Anniversary of the University of Ibadan Diamond 101.1FM, at the Trenchard Hall University of Ibadan.

Going down the memory lane, Oloye Lekan Alabi, described how the media could either make or mar an election process by the role it plays, and with the kind of information provided before, during and after an election.

We are delighted to report that our own Professor Isaac Olawale Albert made the final list of West Africa Peacebuilding Fellows. Professor Albert is of the Institute for Peace and Strategic Studies (IPSS), University of Ibadan, Ibadan, Nigeria.

The body of fellows is made up of 20 West Africans who have distinguished themselves in peace practice and whose work transcend their immediate countries to at least five West African states. It requires a minimum of 20 years experience and other stringent measures

The Deputy Vice Chancellor (Research, Innovation and Strategic Partnership [RISP]), University of Ibadan, Professor Olanike K. Adeyemo has been elected as a fellow of the World Academy Science (TWAS).

Prof Adeyemo who is also an alumna of the University of Ibadan was considered worthy to be elected as a recipient of this enviable honour because of her sterling contributions towards the Advancement of Science in developing countries, and particularly in Nigeria.

Mrs Olatokunbo Adenike Fagbemi, an alumnae of the prestigious University of Ibadan has been appointed as the GMD/CEO of the Nigerian Aviation Handling Company Plc (NAHCO Aviance).

The appointment of Mrs Fagbemi took effect from 20 December, 2018, following the adoption of a new group structure by the company, which she is expected to drive.

Mrs Fagbemi, a thoroughbred Aviation Management professional and a management turnaround expert with IATA, ACI, ICAO and IAP certifications will bring on board

The University College Ibadan (UCI) opened on 18 January 1948 with a total of 104 students distributed into three Faculties, namely Arts, Science and Medicine. The temporary take-off site was an old site previously used by the 56th Military General Hospital at Eleyele, about eight kilometres away from the present site.

In February 1948, the University of London allowed Ibadan its special relationship scheme. The formal opening of the College took place on 25 March 1948. Arthur Creech Jones, then British Secretary of State for the Colonies, turned the first sod at the permanent site of the University College, on 17 November 1948, which became the University's Foundation Day.

As it advances in age, one of the major things that the University continues to pride in is its alumni who continue to make their marks in various fields of endeavour, and contribute toward enhancing governance and boosting economics all around the world.

In recognition of some of these distinguished UI ambassadors who continue to enhance the relevance of the University all over the world through their sterling contributions, the University as part of its 70th Anniversary commemoration, held the Night of Honour/Lifetime Achievement Awards on Friday 16 November, 2018 at the Trenchard Hall of the University.

One of the oldest alumni of the University of Ibadan and a world renowned medical doctor, Emeritus Prof. Oladipo Olujimi Akinkugbe has announced his decision to hang his stethoscope, distribute his patients to various doctors and donate some of his valuable medical books to his alma mater on the occasion of his 85 birthday.

An erudite scholar and legal icon of the University of Ibadan was among the 30 eminent Lawyers that were conferred with the prestigious title of Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) at the special session of the Supreme Court of Nigeria in Abuja last month.

Speaking at the reception held by Prof. Bamgbose after the conferrement, the Vice Chancellor of the University of Ibadan, Prof.A.I. Olayinka who was also the Chairman at the occasion, congratulated Prof. Bamgbose on a honour well deserved.

The Ultra modern Aliko Dangote office complex of the University of Ibadan (UISB) donated by Aliko Dangote Foundation was commissioned with great fanfare on Wednesday, 25 July, 2018 at the Ajibode site of the Business School.

According to the Director of the Business School, Prof. Adenike Osofisan, the office complex which is the first for the UISB could not have come at a more critical time as it would make the training and retraining of business managers for greater efficiency much easier, thus contributing to the repositioning of our Economy as a nation.

It was a thing of great pride as the Department of Economics, University of Ibadan hosted its 1988 graduating class (ECO88) on a reunion programme on Tuesday, 26 June and Wednesday 27 June, 2018.

While on a courtesy visit to the Vice Chancellor, Prof. A.I. Olayinka, FAS, the nostalgic feeling and excitement of the ECO88 set was quite palpable, both at seeing themselves after such a long time, and also at being back to their Alma mater.

APPOINTMENT AS A MEMBER OF COUNCIL OF THE ASSOCIATION OF COMMONWEALTH UNIVERSITIES

The Vice-Chancellor, University of Ibadan, Ibadan, Prof Abel Idowu Olayinka, has been elected a member of the Council of the Association of Commonwealth Universities (ACU). He is to represent West Africa on the Council, from 1 August 2017 till 31 July 2020.

The Deputy Senate President, Senator Ike Ekeremadu has asserted that corruption, though prevalent in Nigeria, is not indigenous to, or peculiar to the country, but is experienced in every part of the world, with the difference being the level of corruption and the people’s attitude to the menace.

This assertion about corruption, which he defined simply as the abuse of entrusted power for private gain, was made at the 4th National Public Service Lecture of the University of Ibadan Alumni Association

The Vice Chancellor of the University of Ibadan has described it as a rare privilege to be matriculating in the University of Ibadan.

He stated this while addressing students at the 2016/2017 Matriculation Ceremony of the University. According to him, the admission process was a highly competitive one, with only 3,536 students being admitted out of the 31,893 candidates who applied for both the UTME and Direct entry programmes

The first African Professor of Medicine and founding father of the UI Medical School Emeritus Professor Theophilus Ogunlesi has charged the management of the University of Ibadan to encourage its alumni to do more in support of the country’s premier University.

Emeritus Professor Ogunlesi gave the charge when the University of Ibadan management paid him a visit in his country home in Sagamu, Ogun State.

Institutionalizing the culture of philanthropy through educational advancement at the University of Ibadan recently received a boost with the visit of a team of experts from the Council for Advancement and Support of Education, CASE, in the United Kingdom. The team comprising two fundraising experts and consultants, Simon Pennington and Jennie Moules and the Programmes and Membership Manager (Africa) from the Council for Advancement and Support of Education, CASE, Pat Onoapoi, were in Ibadan for an On Campus Training in Educational Fundraising.

The two-day training programme saw the visiting team meeting Principal Officers of the University, Staff of Advancement Centre and other key officers of the University whose roles are relevant to the development of educational advancement at the University of Ibadan.

The Alumni Lecturer for 2016, Dr. Sola David Borha has advocated that the Nigerian government should allow market forces to determine the prices of goods and services. Dr. David-Borha took this position while delivering a lecture during the 2016 Annual Alumni Lecture of the University of Ibadan Alumni Association, at the University of Ibadan.

In her words: “….. we have over the years had government controlled prices through the creation of subsidies with the intention of distributing resources in an egalitarian manner, which has led to huge shortages, scarcity of supply, high prices and a sizeable black market”.

The Governing Council of the University of Ibadan has appointed Professor Abel Idowu Olayinka as the 12th Vice Chancellor with effect from 01 December, 2015. He succeeds Professor Isaac Folorunso Adewole whose tenure as VC ends as of that date.

Announcing the appointment at a well attended and historical press conference in the Senate Chamber of the institution on Wednesday, 9 September, the pro chancellor and chairman of council, Dr. Umar Musa Mustapha said the new VC, a world-class geologist, is the first person from the Faculty of Science and the Department of Geology to be appointed as VC since the University was established in 1948.

The death of the Iconic corporate mogul, Mr. Gamaliel Onosode has been described as a rude shock.

The Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ibadan, Prof. I.F. Adewole stated this in a condolence message to the family of the late Pro-Chancellor and Chairman, Governing Council of the University of Ibadan.

Prof. Adewole who was represented by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic), Prof. E.A. Aiyelari described the late sage as a rare gem and one of the finest gentlemen who ever lived.

The Management, staff and students of the University of Ibadan deeply regret to announce the death of the foremost diplomat and outstanding alumnus of the University of Ibadan, Prof. Adebowale Ibidapo Adefuye. Prof Adefuye was until his death, the Nigerian Ambassador to the United States of America, a position which he assumed in March 2010.

He was 68 at death.
