2019 ELECTIONS – MEDIA SHOULD NOT BE PARTISAN BUT PRACTISE WITHIN THE AMBIT OF THE LAW – OLOYE LEKAN ALABI

A Veteran Journalist and Public Relations guru, Oloye Lekan Alabi has charged the media not to be partisan in reporting the upcoming 2019 elections but to practice within the ambit of the Law. He gave this charge while presenting a lecture entitled: “2019 Elections: Facts, Myths and Realities” in commemoration of the 10th Anniversary of the University of Ibadan Diamond 101.1FM, at the Trenchard Hall University of Ibadan. Going down the memory lane, Oloye Lekan Alabi, described how the media could either make or mar an election process by the role it plays, and with the kind of information provided before, during and after an election. While rating Diamond 101.1 FM high in terms of punctuality and professionalism based on his experience with them, Oloye Lekan Alabi enjoined the media to be alert to its duty. He also counseled the electorates to investigate politicians and vote right. Prior to the Lecture, the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Abel Idowu Olayinka, FAS, ably represented by the Deputy Vice Chancellor (Administration) Prof. Kayode Adebowale in his welcome address, congratulated Diamond FM for having sustained and improved on the standards with which it took off ten years ago, thereby making the station a pride of the University as one of the best Campus Radio Stations, connecting the gown with the town. He also acknowledged the role of Diamond FM in enhancing students’ acquisition of knowledge and skills in broadcasting and radio transmission. The Vice Chancellor enjoined the electorates not to sell their votes but vote conscientiously. While presenting the Opening Remark, the Acting Director Information, Technology and Media Services, (ITeMS), Mrs Abiodun Alao appreciated the University Management for its unwavering support to Diamand FM, which continues to partner with other Centres and departments of the University to deliver programmes that educate, inspire and entertain, thereby linking the gown with the town. On his part, the Station Manager, Mr. Paul Emokhare stated that the lecture was a part of Diamond FM’s contribution towards preparing Nigerians for the forthcoming 2019 General Elections and to sensitize the media to rise up to their responsibility at this time. Others who spoke at the occasion included the Royal Father of the day, Oba Adedokun Abolarin, the Orangun of Ike-Ila who charged the media to provide the people with credible information. The Resident Electoral Commissioner, Oyo State, Mr. Mutiu Agboke, reassured the people of the readiness of INEC to conduct a credible election and also encouraged the media to always provide verifiable and credible information, instead of misinformation. Others at the event include the Oyo gubernatorial candidates of the National Interest Party (NIP), Mrs. Bolanle Sarumi Aliyu, the Mega Party of Nigeria (MPN), Mr. Ojo Olayinka, the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Senator Olufemi Lanlehin, ably represented by Honorable Olusegun Olaleye among others. Also present at the occasion were the Chairman, Board of ITeMS, Prof. Folorunso Ogundare; Provost, College of Medicine, Prof. Olubunmi Olapade-Olaopa, ably represented by the Deputy Provost of the College, Prof. Obafunke Denloye, Director, DLC, Prof. Oyesoji Aremu, Director, University Advancement Centre, Mr. A.A. Adeosun, Project Director, Faculty of Agriculture, Prof. Tayo Ladele, and Director, Directorate of Public Communication, Mr. O.M. Oladejo among others.
